Leicester Belgrave Mela Needs Artists

Leicester Belgrave Mela is on the hunt for a collection of individual artists
to deliver multi-art form projects in Leicester.

Leicester Belgrave Mela is an outdoor, annual celebration of South Asian Arts and Indian Culture and this year it celebrates 25 years. We are currently looking for artists who will be able to incorporate the theme of ‘Mela through the Years’ in to interactive and participatory arts projects. These projects will need to engage and inspire, multi-generations of public to encourage participation in South Asian Arts and Indian Culture.

We are interested in ALL art-forms; new, different and diverse! We are looking for both experienced and emerging artists to create high quality pieces of artwork, potentially collaborating with each other. The ideal candidate would be interested in exploring and developing ideas and themes of South Asian arts and Indian culture, have the ability to research the Mela festivals of the past, both in Leicester and around the world, and be happy to deliver participatory arts workshops in both schools and community environments, as well as at the festival itself.

We are particularly looking for, but not exclusively, expertise and experience in the following three areas:
·         Digital arts and media skills which enable animation art to be explored
·         Experience and adaptability in working in different environments including indoor and outdoor areas
·         The ability to design and make large, eye catching structures creating high impact art.

The projects will involve different forms and also unite art to enhance imagination and explore the boundaries of the arts. Artists will be required for various workshop activities between April and July 2011 and will also need to be available on Sunday 10th July for the Leicester Belgrave Mela Festival.
